Lot 1
1652 Massachusetts Oak Tree Shilling Noe-1. PCGS graded AU-58. CAC Approved. Variety with "IN" left of the Oak Tree. Frosty light gray and steel with luster covering the fields and protected areas. Very sharply struck. All the devices are boldly impressed including the finely cut Oak Tree. Just the lightest touch of rub on the highest points of the devices from mint state. This piece would be an unqualified gem except for a mint-made planchet void affecting the N in "IN" and the opposing D in "DOM." Intermediate die state. Struck with the obverse die very slightly off center to K-1 and the reverse off a similar amount to K-9. This example has details as bold as the finest example in the Ford collection and superior to any of the Hain pieces. Listed on page 39 in the "Redbook." Weight shown as 71.6 grains on the PCGS label. Population 1; none finer at PCGS.
Estimated Value $10,000-UP.

Sharpness F15 but there is an "X" scratched at the top of the tree with a segment extending up into the H in MASATHVSETS. Otherwise the surfaces are smooth and display only minor marks. Glossy light steel gray. The date, denomination, and legends are all easily readable except for parts of ENGLAND, and the Oak Tree is nearly complete. Listed on page 39 in the "Redbook." Weight 68.2 grains.
Estimated Value $1,500-UP.

Lot 3
1652 Massachusetts Pine Tree Shilling Noe-2 on Jumbo Planchet. PCGS graded MS-61. No Pellets at Trunk. Choice glossy light to medium steel gray and silver. Sharply and evenly struck on a thin "Jumbo" planchet. The planchet is not round, more of a wide oval-shape, and that resulted in the tops of a few letters being off the planchet while other places have extra planchet metal outside the border beads. Otherwise the only defect is a small planchet fissure at the border beads between the A & S in MASATHVSETS. The Oak Tree has unusually straight limbs and the Noe-2 is sometimes called "The Straight Tree" variety. A very attractive example of the variety, and the seldom-seen "Jumbo" planchet is a bonus. Weight 70.4 grains as listed on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 2 finer in 62 at PCGS.
Estimated Value $20,000-UP.

Lot 4
1652 Massachusetts Pine Tree Shilling Noe-19 Rarity-5 F15. Small Planchet Type. Sharpness VF30 or better but there is an obvious bend in the planchet at the left base of the tree that weakens the designs in that area. The opposing area at "AN" is weakened as well and that area is covered with several dull, shallow scratches. Otherwise the surfaces are smooth and the devices are bold, much sharper than usually seen on this tough variety. Later die state with a strong die crack from the right foot of the A in MAS slanting to the rim over the adjacent S. Listed on page 39 in the "Redbook." Weight 69.8 grains.

No marks or planchet defects. The only defects are traces of verdigris in protected areas on the king side. Otherwise this piece is choice, especially for a St. Patrick farthing. The "Martlet" or small bird under the King is clear and the brass splasher extends from the crown into the face and chest of the King. Finest of only 5 known to us of this variety, far superior to the Vlack-Griffee example. Listed on page 41 in the "Redbook." Weight 75.2 grains.

1787 Connecticut Miller 37.14-cc.2 Rarity-6 VG8. Draped Bust Left. Sharpness at least F15 where the designs were properly struck up, but the right half of the obverse is covered with hairline scratches, there is a sharp nick on the chin, and traces of greenish verdigris show on the left side of the reverse. In addition a planchet lamination fissure extends horizontally across the obverse passing through the middle of the neck. Rather glossy medium brown and light chocolate. The date is weak but still readable with some effort. This piece was struck while it was barely overlapping another planchet, and an indent from that second planchet is clearly visible at the bottom of the obverse. While this piece is certainly not perfect, it is still superior to the Miller-Ford example of the variety. Only a very few better ones are known. Weight 132.4 grains. The dates of the Connecticut (1788) and of the Nova Constellatio (1785) are complete and clear, and "NOVA" also shows clearly off the Mailed Bust.
